Dear City Council Members,
I attended the meeting this evening with concern regarding item #16. I appreciated how professional the meeting was
conducted as well as being grateful for so many of the projects you’ve taken on. Yes, there has been some great success.
Being a long term resident of San Luis Obispo, I can say I don’t recognize this town anymore. It feels to many of us
residents that we no longer have a say in what happens to this community. Tonight’s meeting on the “proposed” Marsh
Street Project, had obviously already been decided before the meeting. I understand By-laws were the reason for the
formality, but how pitiful! You could have tried to cover it up just a little as it was extremely obvious that was the case! It
would have been much easier to swallow. I must have missed it because on the agenda, item #16 was to address
rezoning, which I did not hear a mention of that word - STRANGE!
To the community, nothing changed with this project since it’s last debut in September, only that bigger financial
backers (Copelands) partnered with them, and now able to buy this project by preserving the Muzio building. It’s still as
unsightly, and far too tall. Why do we have a building height restrictions if we’re not going to follow them? Why don’t
we eliminate them and then people like me wouldn’t have an axe to grind. Money talks which is very apparent! Citizens
& taxpayers no longer have any impact. Voices used to count for something. Now we’re punished, disregarded, or made
a spectacle of. I can say that after living here for 41 years, I no longer recognize the values of this community which
gravely saddens and extremely disappoints me!
Do you support our police handling of the BLM protests. I’m ashamed of our law enforcement. Where is City Counsel on
this issue - nowhere. EVERYONE has been peaceful and respectful and tear gas has been thrown into the crowd on
several occasions, as well as arrests on law abiding citizens. We have rights to organize, after all that’s what this country
was based upon. We have big problems here with law enforcement. What are you going to do about this problem?
I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hope you genuinely heard me because I speak for many.
I wish you good health.
Regards,
Betsy Schwartz
