Good evening,
We are writing to speak to the importance of establishing a Life Plan Community in San Luis Obispo. Our story is
probably similar to many others with regard to our long ties in a city we regarded as our “forever” home.
We moved to the SLO area in 1972 and after making our home there for 47 years we found it necessary to relocate
to another city. We chose Santa Barbara where there are several Life Plan Communities to choose from. This was
a very difficult decision to make but because of inevitable health concerns that will no doubt face us in the future,
and wanting to live in a community where we could be independent for as long as possible and have control over
the final years of our lives, it was the sensible thing for us to do.
We are both Cal Poly Alumni, were employed by the SLO Coastal School District, the State of California and owned
a business in SLO. We have life-long friends in the community and deep ties to our church and other organizations
there. Of course we would have preferred to remain in San Luis Obispo but without the resources to provide the
kind of life-style we are comfortable with, we reluctantly left the city we hoped would always be our home.
San Luis Obispo is a welcoming and caring community, one that we feel has always put the welfare of its citizens
first. We hope that you will consider the needs of this growing segment of the population and help SLO retain those
who want to stay in the community for the rest of their lives.
Thank you,
John and Kathy Eichler
