Subject:Resolution in Support of Medicare For All
To the City Council of San Luis Obispo:
Please, each of you, lend your support to a resolution by which the City of San Luis Obispo publicly goes on record in
favor of the Medicare for All Act. There are very compelling reasons for passage of this act.
1. Healthcare expenses are draining local household budgets during this unprecedented period of disease and job loss.
The Medicare for All Act would provide relief for hundreds of San Luis Obispo residents.
2. People of color comprise approximately 30 percent of the population of our city but greater than 50 percent of
coronavirus cases. City Council support of one equitable system of healthcare for all is one of the core values of an anti-
racist community.
3. San Luis Obispo's municipal budget is strained in part by the rising cost of health insurance for its employees. The
Medicare for All Act would reduce double-digit increases in health insurance premiums to something much closer to the
general rate of inflation.
4. Essential workers, especially those who are sanitizing the places where we shop, eat, work and congregate, generally
do not have employer-sponsored health insurance. Many essential workers have no health insurance at all. The
Medicare for All Act would ensure everyone has access to high-quality healthcare and would affirm the value of every
human life.
Thank you for considering this step. The U.S. Congress has failed for years to make improvements to the Affordable Care
Act and, indeed, the Trump administration has intentionally undermined that Act. The nation needs to stop treating
its citizens as if they lived in a third-world country and provide affordable national health care.
