DE&I Task Force Agenda Correspondence
Date: October 21, 2020
TO: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Task Force Members
FROM: Dale Magee, DE&I TF Coordinator
Beya Makekau, DE&I TF Facilitator
SUBJECT: Note Regarding October 22nd Meeting
Hi TF Members,
I want to start by thanking you all for your continued commitment to this Task Force and our
efforts. I also want to acknowledge the impact that the recent charges by the District Attorney’s
office has had on our community.
The creation of this group is rooted in identifying equity gaps in our city and addressing the roots
of racism, social injustice, and systemic oppression that jeopardize San Luis Obispo’s ability to
create a community that fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion for our most marginalized
populations. The events of this past week amplify the importance of this work and the outcomes
of the Task Force.
I’ve been in conversation with Amman and Dale, and we ask that this Thursday’s meeting
agenda proceed as planned. We will expand space to talk about what is top of mind for you as it
pertains to the efforts of Task Force and your role as members, and hear questions or concerns
that may have been raised over the past few days that are aligned with that. We ask that we do
not center on the specifics of the charges or any person’s case, nor ask specific questions to
Amman.
We also want to be mindful of and honor the fact that we will be joined by members of the
yak titʸu titʸu yak tiłhini Northern Chumash Tribe, the homeland people of San Luis Obispo. As
their time is an invaluable contribution to the Task Force, we want to ask if you all could plan on
going till 8:00pm this week.
Please feel free to reach out to myself or Dale with any questions or concerns.
