For over 60 years, the United Way of SLO County has been actively working to support SLO County communities through programs that focus on education, health, financial stability, and community strengthening. They have done this by focusing on root causes and structural change. The recently launched Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiative makes explicit the organizational commitment to the ongoing work of dismantling structural inequality. As a recipient of a COVID-19 mini grant, I am grateful for the United Way’s assistance as my team responds to increased need as a result of the global Coronavirus pandemic. My organization is one of 13 local organizations that received more than $25,000 in grant funding; our grant was for the Young Readers Enhancement Program, to provide additional fun and educational reading materials to children in San Simeon. In our five years of serving the immigrant community in San Simeon and Cambria, we have always focused on supporting families through food security efforts and educational support. Support from the United Way has freed us to meet some of our immediate objectives in these challenging and uncertain times. We ask that you consider granting the full funding request of the United Way of SLO county so that organizations like ours can continue to meet the needs of the population we serve. Thank you, Kristine Fox Social and Environmental Justice Chair Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cambria Team Leader for The Young Readers Enhancement Program Essay Coach for Undergraduate and Graduate Applications www.smartcollegeapplications.com Phone: 805-203-5428 1
