Subject:To the SLO City Council Please pass the Medicare for All Act of 2019
I support the Medicare for All Act of 2019. I urge you to vote YES on the resolution of support for HR 1384 and
allow Mayor Harmon to join Mayors4Medicare.
1. Healthcare expenses are draining local household budgets during this unprecedented period of disease and
job loss. The Medicare for All Act would provide relief for hundreds of San Luis Obispo residents.
2. People of color comprise approximately 30 percent of the population of our city but greater than 50 percent
of coronavirus cases. City Council support of one equitable system of healthcare for all is one of the core
values of an anti-racist community.
3. San Luis Obispo's municipal budget is strained in part by the rising cost of health insurance for its
employees. The Medicare for All Act would reduce double-digit increases in health insurance premiums to
something much closer to the general rate of inflation.
4. Essential workers, especially those who are sanitizing the places where we shop, eat, work and congregate,
generally do not have employer-sponsored health insurance. Many essential workers have no health
insurance at all. The Medicare for All Act would ensure everyone has access to high-quality healthcare and
would affirm the value of every human life.
Sincerely,
