Subject: Recommendations ‐ follow up
Good afternoon, TF Members,
Thank you again for your work last night. Even in normal times this phase of a planning process is usually the
most cumbersome – the added challenges of the complexity of DEI work, Brown Act, time, and us not being in
person cannot be underestimated. Thank you so very much for your patience and understanding; we hear your
frustration, and we will keep trying to minimize pain points.
In hopes of clarifying the current “laundry list” document and the recommendation document that will go to
Council, we hope the following is of help:
January 12: City Councils receives Task Force’s recommendations on “being a City committed to DEI and
demonstrating it throughout its policies, practices, funding, etc.” [wording for concept]
Please note: You are tasked with “recommendations” not “goals.” Your GOAL is to help the City advance its
DEI, justice, and belonging efforts. Please continue to think of recommendations – and you are not limited in
numbers. (Though prioritizing will be important)
The Recommendation Document they receive should have this basic outline:
Background / Premise / The Desired Outcome (i.e. the desired SLO)
Recommendation #1: Adopt a 21-23 DE&I Major City Goal
[there’s not much more to say. This is it. You’re making a statement. The Major City Goal
adoption process is linked to the financial planning process which is Feb – April.]
2
Recommendation #2: Commit to and advance diversity, equity, inclusion within the
City of SLO. Demonstrate this commitment in all aspects of City goal-setting, planning,
budgeting, policy- and decision-making. [or some such language. Task Force to word.]
This will be the meat of the document. “Here are the Task Force’s recommended actions,
activities, policies, priorities, etc. to fulfill this commitment….”
THIS IS THE LIST YOU HAVE NOW - REFINED, PRIORITIZED. (plus, anything else you
may want to recommend) You package it how you see fit. You push the City for what you
believe the City should do and can do (Now and Future), what it could help others do, etc.
*If DEI is adopted as a 21-23 Major City Goal, this section would be utilized as a framework
for many workplans throughout the City, and much would be funded.
If DEI is NOT adopted as a Major City Goal, these recommendations could still happen but
probably not as a full package. So, prioritizing will be important – i.e. tell Council the 3-5
things you feel are imperative. But definitely do show what a robust DEI-competent City looks
like.
Recommendation #3: Enhance scope and influence of the HRC. [or some such language)
“Here are our suggestions to do that….”
LIST, with Top Priorities
Appendices
-Members
-All recommendations, etc.
Hope that helps a bit.
Here’s link to City’s current MCGs. You can see the fiscal connection once something is a MCG.

We’ll get the compilation document back to you this weekend so you can do another on-your-own review, and
be ready for Dec 3’s group review. You do NOT have to say NO to things, if you believe they are helpful to a
robust, comprehensive DEI system. However, prioritizing will be needed which will be group work we do
collectively at next meeting.
We are here to support you and this process to the best of our ability. Our main goal is to ensure the efforts of
the TF land with the highest potential of success and implementation.
As always please know you can reach out to us with any additional thoughts.
Thank you,
3
