Dear Mayor Harmon and City Council,
I support including Dana St Multi-family Properties in the Dana Street Parking District.
My husband and I live in a one bedroom apartment in an eight unit complex and only have one parking spot available to
us as part of our lease. This means one of us needs to park somewhere else and we are no longer permitted to park on
the street due to the parking district. We are also not permitted to purchase a parking permit, because our dwelling is
not included in the district currently. However, the street in front of our dwelling is included in the district, so there is no
street parking available to us. There are others in our complex who are impacted in this manner as well who have had to
park on Brizzolara St. While this is not a concern during the pandemic, we also cannot have any family visit overnight or
any friends visit for even longer than two hours, because there is nowhere for them to park in the near vicinity.
I support the Dana St parking district, because our street has been over-utilized by Mission Prep students, downtown
employees, and downtown business patrons for many years. However, residents on the street all feel that the multi-
family properties should have been included in the original district and asked that this be addressed prior to the original
implementation and again during last year’s city council meeting review. At that city council meeting one year ago, city
council asked that city staff update the district to include the multi-family properties, but this has yet to happen. I know
there are many issues facing the city currently due to the pandemic, but I would ask that council and staff make this
priority due to this being a multi-year effort by residents.
I would also ask that the two hour overlay be eliminated. Many Dana St residents have observed it does not appear to
be well monitored or enforced. We are the only parking district to have this additional overlay and it appears to be next
to impossible to enforce. Parking Services has limited hours to monitor the street and had not been monitoring it all this
past year. Residents recently complained to Parking Services that many non-residents had been parking on Dana St all
day and some overnight and then Parking Services added Dana St to the occasional route. Police and SNAP have stated
they have no way of monitoring the two hour overlay, because they don’t have the camera equipment and software
which Parking Services utilizes to monitor.
We ask that you move forward with including multi-family properties in the Dana St parking district and eliminate the
two hour overlay. We appreciate your consideration and look forward to the meeting tomorrow!
Sincerely
Dianna Beck
