Subject:SLO City 2021-23 Financial Plan
Hello, my name is Raleigh Delk and I am writing to give my thoughts on the future city budget. The answers I left on the
survey for financial priorities reflect my beliefs and the demands of the organization Abolitionist Action Central Coast
SLO. The issues of climate, racial justice, economic resiliency, homeless, and lack of affordable housing are all
interconnected and need more support.
Through a pandemic, small businesses have closed and the business that stay open put their employees at risk. This
societal issue of profits being tied to human life is bigger than one city, but rent relief for all is still an ambitious, yet
necessary goal to strive for.
Mostly Latinx and Indigenous farm workers have had little choice but to continue being underpaid to sustain our
inefficient, unsustainable food system. It needs to be replaced. The city can help by promoting local farming that
regenerates soil, saves water, supports local Chumash sovereignty such as the People's Revolutionary Garden Network
and the Northern Chumash Tribal Council. Preparing for a a century of uncertain climate disaster and feeding those in
need is a priority.
Those in need include people struggling with homelessness that continue to be abused and displaced by the police.
That's one example of something that would be better handled by an expert.
Defunding the police cannot come without investing in the community. Investing in the community cannot come
without uplifting BIPOC, epscially when they are charged for social disobedience necessary for change. Protesting won't
be necessary when all these issues are thoroughly addressed.
Sincerely,
Raleigh
