The heading should have been “future” not “figure”, which I could not correct. Sorry.

Subject:Requested input on figure direction of our city
Dear Council et al,
Below are a few of my concerns (and plaudits) about what direction I would urge the City to choose:
1) To me the top concern is the welcome mat the City continues to extend to the “homeless.” I live very close to
Mitchell Park and it can degenerate into an encampment in the blink of an eye, as observed repeatedly on NextDoor. I
can no longer walk my dogs on the grass there as it is littered with bits of questionable food.
One step to correct this is to forbid the appropriation of the shopping carts and return them to the appropriate stores.
Some of these folks have commandeered several carts. How about forbidding use of carts, and limit wagons or such to 1
per person.
2) This past week there was an incident in Mitchell Park involving one of the above. The City response was 1 hook and
ladder, one other fire truck, 2 or 3 cop cars and an ambulance. That is an over-the-top response. It seems as if one or
maybe 2 EMT crews should suffice. And the hook and ladder? Why? That is a super expensive machine to be wearing
out in short jaunts around town. And in speaking with SLO fire about 30% of its workload is similar to what I just
described, with other stations having a much higher percent. Ouch!
3) I do not understand how the huge new complex next to Miners and the remarkably ugly 2 story units on S. Higuera
ever got approved. The Santa Barbara scope is far to vast for that neighborhood. And where oh where are the residents
in either location going to park? That question of parking spaces per unit must be codified and enforced,
4) I think the new intersection street art is fun and mostly light hearted. Hooray.
5) Can we leave some lots and spaces undeveloped please? One of the many charms of SLO is the feel of proximity to
the hills and peaks. That seems to be taken away from us in this surge of construction.
6) One suggestion about garbage collection: how about a new mind set in encouraging residents to put out their
containers only when they are half full plus. On my collection day there are lots of cans which have only a smattering of
stuff inside. My experience is that I can get at least 2 weeks of input in the cans. Maybe a phone call from the City would
be listened to and appreciated by the trash company.
That’s it for today. Thank you for your time and consideration.

This illustrates my first point exactly—3 plus shopping carts, encampment and one passed out now local guy.
Thank you
