Subject:Public Comment for Feb. 3, 2021 Parks & Recreation Commission
Dear Honorable Chair Thurman and Commissioners:
Thank you for the opportunity to address the Commission on a matter important to many residents of
downtown San Luis Obispo. I am writing in regard to Emerson Park, which is poised to undergo many
exciting changes. On behalf of myself and many other dog owners and lovers downtown, I would like
to request that a portion of the grassy area at Emerson Park is dedicated to an off-leash dog park.
Many of us who live downtown do not have a yard and cannot afford a home with a yard. In addition,
we may not own a car to transport our dogs to El Chorro, the only fenced-in dog park in the area. In the
area in which I live, almost every family or person owns a dog. We rely on Emerson Park to exercise our
furry family members, engage with other friendly dog lovers, and enjoy the outdoors.
Emerson Park is an amazing space! It currently has a dedicated space for children to play, for adults to
workout, for people to play basketball, to plant gardens, and to play bocce ball. Dogs that receive
adequate exercise are happy dogs; providing such a space downtown in Emerson Park (the only
existing space where residents can provide their furry family members the opportunity to get
necessary exercise) is critical. This would also be beneficial to preserving the park by ensuring dog play
does not encroach on the other areas designated for other activities at the park. A committee of dog
lovers could be established to ensure maintenance and clean-up of the dog area.
Thank you again for providing me the opportunity to advocate on behalf of my neighbors and our
canine friends!
