Subject:Regarding the Proposed Bike Lane Oceanaire - Gallelon
To whom it may concern,
As a resident of SLO I very much appreciate the focus the city is putting into developing bike lanes especially those that
might assist students safely getting to and from school. In regards to the proposed protected 2 lane bike path on
Oceanaire & Galleon I am concerned at how this will effect the quality of life of many neighbors. Commuting to school
happens in the morning and afternoon but parking in the neighborhood is a 24/7 necessity.
Oceanaire has many condo complexes with limited parking. This means limited parking for residents, guests, and the
workers who serve these complexes. I would encourage any one from the board to walk the proposed path on
Oceanaire to see what the average parking looks like on the street. I venture you won’t find a time without most the
curb filled with cars.
Adding the bike lanes doesn’t eliminate the cars it relocates them. This will mean added congestion and parking on the
side streets of these neighborhoods. Side streets that currently are safer for children to bike and play. Relocating the
cars to these neighborhoods is going to put neighbor against neighbor as residents compete over limited parking while a
bike lane may very often sit idle.
As a property owner I worry what this will do to my property value. If the bike lane were here today I would have opted
not to buy the condo I did and if this moves forward I will begin the process of looking for a home elsewhere in SLO. The
available parking was a huge factor in considering this purchase. As a member of my complexes HOA I am concerned
with how this will effect our vendors as well as neighbors vendors from being able to service these properties.
As someone who loves to ride their bike in SLO and my neighborhoods I might suggest taking a closer look at the streets
within the neighborhood. These often have less parking and potentially a wider lane. I wonder if there is a way to
increase a protected biking lane but minimize the lost parking especially in an area where curb parking appears to be
highly utilized.
I understand the difficult decision the board is in. Improving bike access in SLO is something our community embraces
but in this case I think there might be a better compromise. Elimination of the street parking in this neighborhood is
going to add undue burden to the many who currently live here and may drive away many who would want to live here
in the future.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
