Hello San Luis Obispo City Council,
I am emailing you all today over the recent announcement of installing pickleball courts at Mitchell Park. I cannot
express enough how troubling it is to see my city council make the decision to spend precious city funds to build courts
for such a privileged sport.
Instead, I would like to suggest using the little land and funds available to start a community garden. This would serve
the surrounding community much better than a single-use pickleball court. It would also allow our community to come
together and cultivate more meaningful connections with each other. A community garden would also improve the
aesthetic and welcoming nature the park already provides.
Mitchell Park has also been one of the most utilized open spaces for our community to come together to host large
events and demonstrations. Installing a pickleball court would negatively impact this (I hope this isn't the reason you are
considering this absurd building project). Especially in a time where we are dependent on any open space available to
us.
Now more than ever we need to think critically about what types of changes we want to make to our parks. This is not
one we should be considering. To put it simply, shift funds to a community garden. Listen to your constituents.
Best,
Nancy Lagunas
