Primary Narrative:
BC2 C3 to report of commercial structure fire with first alarm assignment, arrived at scn to find a single story, commercial
structure at the end of a strip mall, light smoke showing from structure with no active flames visible, E4 prepared to make
entry and T1 assigned ventilation, BC2 assumed Valley IC, E21 assigned 2 out, E4 assigned fire attack and reported cold smoke
in structure with fire controlled by the sprinklers, fire knocked down, E3 assigned to control the riser/water supply to the
sprinkler system, T2 was assigned to soften the structure and assist T1 with ventilation and salvage/overhaul, SLO City
Investigator requested, but none available, SLOFIST requested with no response, Cal Fire Investigator then requested to the
scene, water shut down, SLO County Environmental Health notified, alarm company / repair tech requested, business owner
on scene and aware of incident, property management also at scene, surplus units released and scene/command turned over
to E4, BC avail.
Additional Narrative (#1 of 2 ):
E3 arrived and assigned to shut down sprinklers in unit where water was actively flowing. E3 checked inside structure for
indications of a riser room without success. No labeling was noted on exterior doors of building. E3 shutdown a nearby PIV
valve with no change in flow inside the structure. E3 then began forcing exterior doors open with hand tools and circular saw.
4 doors were forced on back bravo side of building. 1 additional doors was forced, which was the only one that had labeling of
riser room, which was located on the C/D corner of the complex. E3 also shut down a second PIV valve in Alpha parking lot.
E3 relayed info to IC, and also relayed that the keys we had to the complex would not open any of the doors that were
forced. E3 released without incident.
Additional Narrative (#2 of 2 ):
First alarm dispatched to the report of a structure fire, upon arrival E4 noted light smoke in the building with sprinkler heads
flowing, E4 took command as Valley IC and continued the response. E4 made entry on side B, noting moderate smoke down to
the floor, no active fire noted upon scanning the area with a thermal imaging camera. Once two out was established, E4
assigned T1 ventilation, and made entry into the building as smoke was clearing. Several small appliances (sandwich press,
toaster, coffee machines) were noted to be on and at full heat, even though the business had been closed all day. Above
the small appliances, a stack of disposable food containers and waxed paper was burned with a V pattern appearing above it.
Three sprinkler heads had activated, visibility was poor due to sprinkler flow. T2 and T1 assisted FF4 with containing the
sprinklers, while E3 worked to shut down the sprinkler valves at the riser. Once water was shut down, additional investigation
revealed a burned Christmas tree, approximately 1/2 way up. Three sprinkler heads had activated in total. An arson
investigator was requested, and salvage began to remove water from the building's floor. Upon arrival of the investigator, it
was determined that the fire likely started in the Christmas tree, due to faulty wiring. The Christmas tree lights had been on
for over 30 days, possibly resulting in the wire degrading and heat increasing. The fire sprinkler system was restored by a
technician, the property management representative was advised of all doors that had been forced while locating the
sprinkler shutoff valve. Environmental health inspector Bliss worked with the business owner, and E4 eventually became
available without further incident.
