In light of your upcoming Saturday city council meeting, I am writing to you today to urge that you allocate less money toward the police and more money toward rent relief in San Luis Obispo. As the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and too many other Black people to name here have illustrated, police forces are racist institutions that only harm Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. Continually funding a group of people who fail to protect everyone in our community only hurts the residents of San Luis Obispo, particularly residents of color. To truly protect communities of color in our city means to decrease the amount of money we spend on the police. Rather than funding a racist police force, I believe our city's money would be better spent providing rent relief and assistance to members of our community. With the pandemic leaving many unemployed, paying rent has become increasingly difficult for residents in San Luis Obispo and cities across the United States. Regardless of a person's income, everyone deserves to have stable living conditions, and the best way to ensure this right to everyone in our community is through rent relief. Given the global pandemic, classism, and racism that is so pervasive in this country, marginalized residents of San Luis Obispo are facing immense difficulties. I ask that you combat the white supremacy and other oppressions in this city by decreasing money spent on police and increasing money spent on rent relief. Thank you. Sincerely, Lindsey Amaro 1
