HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/6/2021 Item PC, Jones Wilbanks, Megan From:Kelsey Jones < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Prioritize Resources, Not Policing City Council Members, My name is Kelsey, and I am a concerned citizen of the city of San Luis Obispo 93405. I have been continually concerned by the proposed project of a new police station. At this particular junction in our history as a nation it is obvious that policing in whatever form it takes is harmful, and often the direct cause of marginalization, both physical and mental anguish, and the death of communities of color. The crisis of COVID-19 has only accentuated the pressure on communities of color and low-income people. I would like you all as city officials to focus your efforts on measures that will aid our most vulnerable community members. These include ,but are not limited to: -Reducing the Police budget and headcount by 33% by next year -Re-investing our money in affirming and life-giving resources for the community such as rent/mortgage/utility for people suffering during this pandemic. I ardently believe a more equitable San Luis Obispo is dependent upon these measures and divestment from policing in general. I urge you all to keep the voices of the public you serve in mind. It may not be typical or seem feasible at the moment, but being in service of the needs of others requires us all to expand what is truly in the realm of possibility. Sincerely, Kelsey Jones 1
