I am contacting you today to urge you to reject any proposed expansions of the police budget/facilities, as well as reduce the police budget and officer headcount by 33% for the next fiscal year. As a country, we’ve seen too many innocent Black lives lost at the hands of police officers. Despite the nationwide Black Lives Matter movement that took place primarily from June-August of 2020, the issue of police brutality has still hardly been addressed. Expanding the police department in any way would be an act of blatant disrespect and harm towards marginalized folks in San Luis Obispo and would serve to further ostracise them. Additionally, the COVID-19 pandemic has left too many people hungry, cold and unsheltered. The lack of governmental support in our country is dehumanizing and unacceptable, but we could change that in San Luis Obispo. I highly urge you to issue full rent, mortgage, and utility relief for all SLO residents, especially BIPOC and Latino folks who have felt the effects of this pandemic the most. We need strong and healthy community members if we hope to rebuild a strong and healthy community. Please listen to your local community members and support the demands of local political organizations, like the Abolitionist Actions of the Central Coast. We will not stop until we get justice. Thank you for your time, Elle Harlow 1
