Public Safety SLO has a focus on finding innovative, evidence-based strategies to promote public safety, specifically the safety of our most marginalized community members. We have six Subcommittees that each prioritize a specific topic of public safety (Prevention/Treatment/Diversion/Policing/DEI/Housing and Employment), and we have a focus on incorporating those with lived experience to have self determination of their own communities. The Letter of Support is attached in this email, and I'd be happy to schedule meetings with each councilmember directly to update you on this group's mission statement, goals and objectives, direct action items we are pursuing, and our upcoming meetings. I'd also be happy for any of you to attend our monthly collaborative meetings as well. We are very much interested in hearing all of your perspective and feedback and seeing what collaboration can occur. Thanks for your consideration, and thank you for your leadership! Take care, Katie Grainger, MPP Public Safety SLO Facilitator 805-748-5662 PublicSafetySLO@gmail.com 1 (805) 748-5662 PublicSafetySLO@gmail.com January 26, 2021 City of San Luis Obispo Mayor and Councilmembers City of San Luis Obispo 990 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, CA 93401 Re: Letter of Support for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Task Force Recommendations Dear City of San Luis Obispo Mayor and Councilmembers: I write on behalf of Public Safety SLO in support of the DEI Task Force recommendations to address systemic and pervasive discrimination within the City of San Luis Obispo. We favor the Council approving DEI as a major city goal. A list of collaborator names in support is attached. We strongly support their Proposal and Recommendations and the focus on improving policies, practices, and structures that increase diversity and inclusion, reduce bias, and protect the well - being, safety, and empowerment of all its residents. We support the goal of creating an ongoing commitment to improving DEI, as well as letting marginalized community members know they are heard and valued. We hope the City prioritizes these recommendations and follows up with direct action to lay the framework for what local municipalities can do in the realm of DEI. We look forward to working with you in eliminating disparities in our community and achieving more equity by investing in the Task Force recommendations. We support a multi-faceted solution to achieve diversity, equity, and inclusion, and this Proposal has our backing.
