Subject:Resident Sharing Concerns for City Council Meeting 2-16
Hello,
My name is Madeleine Campbell, and I am a San Luis Obispo resident.
I am writing to ask that in reviewing the city's budget goals on 2/16/2021, that you opt to invest in supportive community
resources rather than law enforcement.
This last year has shown us the deep-seated flaws and racism in our policing systems on a national level, as well as here
in SLO. Police reformation is not the answer to this. Numerous cities have invested in body cameras, and other equipment
with promise of reducing police brutality however, there has not been a substantial decrease in these incidents or increase
in officers being held accountable.
We are in a crisis right now that is disproportionately affecting black people, native people, other people of color, and low
income people. In addition, SLO has a high cost of living which makes it harder than ever for people to thrive. I hope that
the city considers the struggles of these community members through measures such as rent relief and housing for those
who do not have income and who are low-income.
It is important that you listen to the concerns of the public you serve. We will keep advocating until we get justice.
Sincerely,
Madeleine
