Dear Mayor and Council Members,
I am writing to encourage you to support Climate Action, DEI, Housing as major city goals this budget cycle. I encourage
you to not lose sight of the role that active transportation plays in all of these city goals (and several others) even if it
may not be a standalone city goal. Without a fundamental shift in transportation we will never achieve carbon
neutrality. As long as people who walk and bike make up a vast majority of severe roadway injuries, and all of our city's
traffic related deaths, we will never have an equitable transportation system. As long as our transportation system only
favors car ownership, we will fail to be inclusive of those who are not able to own or drive a vehicle because of
metal, physical, financial, or age related restrictions. As long as people cannot find housing here, then they will not be
able to make that shift out of their cars.
Through the outreach, I am sure you have seen lots of support of active transportation investments as they relate to
these major city goals and investment from G-20 generated funding. Active transportation is wide reaching and part of
the reason we encourage its investment. Active transportation is climate action, DEI, housing, resiliency, economic
vitality, public health and safety, and of course, fun!
I encourage you to support these major city goals and allocate budget to build out the Tier 1 projects listed in the
recently adopted ATP.
Thank you,
Garrett Otto
