Mayor Harmon and Council Members: I want to weigh in on the conversation about the review of the police department's action to the June 1st protest. I, like others, were very concerned about my safety and my son's family who also live in SLO. When social media was abuzz with warnings how the protestors were going to come into neighborhoods so their voices could be heard everywhere, I had sincere anxiety for my safety. The angry comments and videos posted on social media and shown on local media, made me fearful that things were getting out of control. While I support protected free speech in the form of peaceful, safe protest, when it interferes with public safety, I draw the line. I appreciate our police department and the conscientious enforcement they perform in this city on a daily basis--particularly with the many challenging issues they have to face in today's society. I trust they will use restraint when possible but, at the same time, use all enforcement methods available to them when absolutely necessary. They have done this during the many years I've lived in this city and I believe they will continue to do so. Therefore, I believe reducing their budget and/or attempting to micromanage their enforcement will put all of our personal safety at risk. While improvements can always be made, I encourage you to support the police department and not hand tie them from using whatever tools they deem are absolutely necessary to keep us all safe. Thank you. Laura Borchard SLO City Resident 1
