1. Welcome and Introductions
a. Present at today’s meeting: Terrance H., Danny A, Zach R., Immanuel W., Joni R.,
Jevon E., Staci R., Walter H., Camille O’B., Bryan H., Steve V. Blanca M-N., and
Erica S.
b. Guest: Ryan Adserias, Outreach Specialist for OUDI. Ryan shared the news that
OUDI is providing each faculty and staff association (FSA) with $1000.00 for the
academic year. Thanks OUDI!
2. Revisit highlights from 2018-2019 – we spent a few minutes revisiting highlights from AY
2018-2019.
a. CPX Climate Study and Listening Sessions – late winter and all of spring 2019.
Looking forward to hearing the results of the climate study that are going to be
shared with the campus community on October 17, 2019.
b. Home Visit – big thanks to Terrance and LeBren Harris for inviting us to their
home last April. We had a great time and look forward to planning home visits for
this upcoming year!
c. Thanksgiving/Kwanzaa Potluck and Celebration – students, faculty, staff and
community members had a great time at this event last fall. Special thanks to Dr.
U. for coordinating the Kwanzaa celebration.
d. Tabling at various events – BFSA is often invited to table at campus-wide events.
These are great opportunities to meet faculty, staff and students and be visible to
the community at large. Special thanks to Immanuel Williams for helping to table
at the Students of Color Summit in May 2019.
e. 2019 Black Legacy Weekend – great weekend, 53 total registrants; 4600.00 in
sponsorships and $1445 in registration income. Total (est.) cost $6550.00; total
income ~6045; may owe CEP $504.00
3. Planning for 2019-2020 – highlights from 2019-2020 interest form responses
a. By-Laws need review and update (handout) – Erica Stewart and Zach Reed
volunteered to work with Camille to review and suggest revisions to the by-laws.
Camille will follow up with them.
b. Elect BFSA co-chairs and set up committees
i. Ethny Stewart and Immanuel Williams have accepted nominations to
serve as BFSA Co-Chairs. Camille will set up a meeting with them to
arrange for transition to a 2-year term…start time is TBD.
ii. Committees – we did not discuss or set up any committees for the current
academic year. We should revisit this at our next meeting
c. CPX Results: October 17 & 18 – make sure you preregister (see email sent to BFSA
list)
i. Blanca Martinez Navarro provided handouts about the Strategic Diversity
Leadership Institute (October 17 and 18). She and Juliette Duke
encouraged folkx to pre-register and attend as many of the events as
possible.

d. BFSA social/Mixer, TBD (late October/early November) – need volunteers to meet
and plan
i. Bryan indicated that he is going to help set something up for our BFSA
social/mixer. We had a great time a that event last year. Stay tuned for
further updates.
e. 2019 Kwanzaa/Potluck
i. Date will be December 8th from 4 – 6 p.m.
ii. Juliette has agreed to schedule the facility. Our first choice is the Ludwick
Community Center in San Luis Obispo.
iii. We need volunteers to help coordinate the event – Camille will send out a
“save the date” calendar invitation to the blackfacandstaff@calpoly.edu
email list.
f. Black Alumni Tailgate from 2 – 5 p.m. on November 16th
i. Description from the event page on Facebook: The 7th Annual Cal Poly
Black Alumni Chapter Tailgate and BBQ is here! Join alumni, family and
friends for the annual Cal Poly Black Alumni Chapter Family get-together!
Come tailgate with the Cal Poly Black Alumni Chapter, BFSA, BSU, and
NSBE. Enjoy Walter’s HOP Q-Team famous BBQ. Look for us in tailgate
spots 3 and 4 on Perimeter Way. Then cheer on the Mighty Mustangs as
they take on the Eastern Washington Eagles. We will all sit in Section 104.
You promised yourself last year... Don’t miss the fun!

iii. Student Academic Services (SAS) has purchased 20 student tickets for the
tailgate.
g. 2020 Black Legacy Weekend
i. committee to be convened by Jamie Patton; consisting of CP faculty/staff
and alums
ii. date for the event is usually the last full weekend in July. If this holds true
for 2020, then the dates will be July 24 – 26, 2020.
iii. There was a recommendation to reach out to the department of
experience industry management and have their students help with the
event.
4. Announcements
a. Cross Cultural Centers – don’t forget to attend Culture Fest on October 12th from
10 a.m. – 4.00 p.m. BSU will be selling their amazing lemonade and NSBE will be
selling their bacon wrapped hot dogs.
b. BAEC – time for BFSA to meet with candidate for director position on 10/24/19

c. OUDI - $1000.00 to each FSA will be placed into their accounts, plans are
underway for an all FSA mixer to occur on November 1, 2019
d. Admissions – Terrance distributed and explained a handout of preliminary data
for fall 2019 enrollment. The data he shared and highlights he summarized
indicate that Cal Poly has yielded the one of the most diverse classes of students
Cal Poly has seen.
e. BSU – Faculty/Staff Weekly Spotlights
i. Jevon Edwards has sent out a call for BFSA to connect with BSU students
at their meetings. Send her a photo, information about where you work
on campus and she will help coordinate a time for you to attend a BSU
meeting.
f. Race Matters – NoireSLO Social Returns

more details.
g. Other
i. Steve Vines, president of SLO County NAACP reminded us all about the
annual NAACP barbecue on October 12, 2019
ii. We must plan some type of gathering to celebrate Bryan’s new position at
the University of Utah and thank him for his amazing work and leadership
at Cal Poly.
