I have been riding mountain bikes and hiking to enjoy the outdoors for the past 31 years on the Central Coast. I was a permit user this past winter and it was extremely beneficial to me from a mental health standpoint. Exercise is my healthy outlet to relieve stress and cycling in particular brings great joy to me. The permit program allowed me to get several rides in this winter, and I would like to note that I do not believe continuing the program will have a significant increase in medical/rescue calls. Speeds are slower in night riding, and the investment in lighting systems leans more towards serious cyclists that are not out to go crazy on the trails, but those that are committed to riding regularly for fitness rather than for thrills. I also did not encounter any wildlife that would seem to be adversely affected by my presence. Again the lights make your presence known to others so they are alerted to your presence with plenty of warning. I would very much appreciate continued access to the Preserve as a way to maintain my mental health during the short daylight of the winter months.
