Dear SLO City Council Members, My name is Kelsey Jones and I am a resident of the City of San Luis Obispo and am concerned about your consideration of new ordinances affecting our unhoused neighbors; specifically the banning tents from public parks and declaring unattended shopping carts as a public nuisance. Neither of these ordinances address the core issue of the houselessness in this county which is primarily due to a lack of affordable housing and resources. Furthermore sweeps and confiscation of carts can leave individuals without necessary medication, clothes, and valued sentimental items. Ordinances like this have clearly failed in neighboring L.A. County and have also brought about serious lawsuits by the ACLU. I would like to see our city address our houseless neighbors with dignity, respect, as well as look as the roots of the issues. Sweeps and confiscations of carts and tents are superficial solutions that do more harm than anything else.
