Aside from being happy that you are taking our public water supply seriously, I have a few comments about tonight's
discussion.
As a parent I'm much more concerned about the use of pesticides/herbicides (and the food we provide our children) at
our local school campuses than the use of water. We'll leave curriculum and that stuff for a school board meeting...
I'd also suggest that the regular use of gas powered equipment (especially the 2-stroke varieties at 7am) isn't helping our
environmental goals so much.
And as the discussion earlier tonight about parks focused a lot on "children" I find it odd that council members may be
more concerned about schools keeping their lawn areas watered than on the businesses and homes without children
living in them all over the city that continue to waste incredible amounts of water (and chemicals and fossil fuels) on
lawns and non-native plantings.
If you come by our shop on Broad St. you'll see it is landscaped out front with all CA natives (and a new pomegranate
bush)-requiring nothing but the occasional grey-water addition for new plants and the wheel barrow stocked with
annuals. Look across Sandercock street and you will notice another business' landscaping that requires a weekly
equipment visit (gasoline fumes and noise in the early mornings are such a joy) and regular watering. I will also point out
that our side caters to birds, butterflies, and other native insects/pollinators. I am also willing to bet that we are the only
one of the two properties to have received a code violation from the city for not doing it right when some "weeds" got a
bit over 12 inches tall a couple years ago. If only we sprayed Roundup on a regular schedule...
I reiterate that we need to seriously re-make our priorities if we are to ameliorate/reverse the environmental and social
crises we are in the midst of.
FYI-I 100% do not expect a reply to my emails-if we had any semblance of real public engagement in our local
government you'd have hundreds or thousands of people to interact with daily, and there'd be too many young people
demanding for you to be accountable to even discuss things like Teddy Roosevelt statues. I do appreciate that you all
take the time though.
Tim
