To the SLO City Council:
The downtown core of San Luis Obispo is poised to fully reopen and
thrive again. The SLO City Council and staff have done a masterful job of
shepherding the city through the economic travails of this pandemic.
I write in support of proposed parking fee increases in order to rebuild
the Parking Fund that was depleted during the economic downturn
caused by the pandemic. The current fund is below the coverage ratio
requirements needed to secure loans for the construction of the
Palm/Nipomo parking structure, critically needed in a vibrant
downtown area.
The positive vibe from the existing parklets created during the
pandemic adds to the ambiance of the downtown zone. The additional
parking structure is necessary to provide parking lost to the change in
street design that accommodates outdoor seating. In addition, the
garage is a “must have” necessity for Cultural District, private
residential, and commercial improvements and new facilities. The new
parking structure will provide much needed parking for visitors and
residents alike as they flock to the downtown center core.
In summary, I fully support raising fees to fund the Parking Fund.
Sincerely,
Diane Clausen
