Re: Agenda item #10, Parking Rates
SLO Mayor Harmon and City Council Members,
Having lived and worked in SLO for over forty years, we love everything about it, from the wonderful downtown
to the PAC. The pandemic created economic hardship and we applaud the city staff and council for their efforts
to survive the year. Downsizing of city staff was a difficult, but necessary decision. The ingenious creation of
parklets downtown has made it even more engaging and walker friendly, and was one of the few bright spots in a
rough year. With our temperate climate, they could be utilized year round.
We campaigned and voted for Measure G in the hopes that the extra funds would enable the city to expedite the
building of the Palm Nipomo Parking structure. The new parking structure will make the downtown even more
accessible, allow more parklets to be built, and will expedite the creation of the envisioned “cultural corridor”,
an additional draw to downtown SLO’s vibrancy. It will also provide parking for people who want to live
downtown, a plus for downtown’s health.
We support the proposed parking rate changes, as we feel they are fair and reasonable. These proposed changes
will ensure that the parking fund, currently depleted because of the pandemic, will be filled as soon as possible
and the garage can begin vertical construction on the most ambitious schedule possible. We urge you to support
the expedited construction of the proposed Palm Nipomo parking lot.
Sincerely,
Richard & Catherine Luckett
