Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Hello, I'm writing concerning item 10, the 2021-23 Financial Plan. The DEI section mentions Community-based Policing and Restorative Practices. I think any use of DEI funding to continue cultural competency training for officers or introduce new training is inappropriate and carries the possibility of being misused. The months of protests and ongoing support that resulted in the DEI taskforce being created are from people who share an understanding that BIPOC communities deserve direct investment and divestment from police. As for the mention in Strategy 2.5 of alternative methods to policing, the language can be clarified to ensure this means methods independent of policing entirely. The focus on root causes of emergency calls is crucial to other goals of supporting and attracting BIPOC and businesses to the city. I encourage thorough and critical analysis of this budget proposal and look forward to seeing it discussed. And as always I continue to support the demands of Abolitionist Action Central Coast SLO.
