As active local SLO sports enthusiasts, we are grateful to learn that the PRC is working on a long-range plan to
address the current needs of our community. To accommodate the quickly growing Pickleball community, we would
like to encourage you to consider in your plan a Pickleball center at the future Righetti Community Park site.
According to the USA Pickleball Association, the sport has seen a 650% increase in players. The SLO Pickleball
Club has a growing membership of 180 players. Membership has increased 15% every year for six years. Public
participation outside of the Club is many multiples of that number.
At this time, SLO City has only 3 permanent Pickleball courts. By contrast, the City has numerous tennis courts:
Sinsheimer (6), French Park (1), Islay Park (1), Cal Poly (7), Cuesta (7), SLO High School (6), Laguna Middle
School (3) and nearby courts include the Avila Bay Club (7), The SLO Country Club (6), and approximately 20
private courts.
The current proposal at Righetti Park is for 6 Pickleball courts and 4 tennis courts. Given the stats on numbers of
Pickleball players and available courts, and number of tennis players and available courts, it would be prudent to
adjust that to 8 Pickleball courts and 2 tennis courts. This would also effectively create a City Pickleball Center
where youth activities, leagues, rec play and tournaments could be held.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America, attracting young and old alike. The nature of the program is to mix
levels and encourage newcomers to play. This is a healthy, outdoor activity that provides social distancing and
positive social connection at the same time.
Currently, at the French Park courts, we typically see upwards of 20 plus players waiting to get on a court on
Tuesday and Wednesday mornings—when 1-2 tennis players are on the lower court. The lower court (tennis court)
could accommodate 16 Pickleball players at a time. Please note that nearby public tennis courts have been
confirmed available during these times.
Attached please find stats on use at French Park—clearly showing the numbers of Pickleball players. Also, please
find a petition with nearly 500 signatures showing a strong desire for a permanent Pickleball site. Initially, we were
hoping for the French Park tennis court to be converted to permanent Pickleball. Our understanding is that French
Park is considered a neighborhood Park and not a Community Park. In that case, it would make more sense to
create this site at the Righetti Community Park.

The SLO Pickleball Club is prepared to partner with the City in assisting with the creation of this Pickleball Center.
Per our conversation with Club President Brian O’Kelley, he is available for any questions on how the Club might
participate and support this project.
