Dear Parks and Recreation Commissioners,
Our non-profit organization, Friends of SLO City Dog Parks, was very excited to see the interest expressed by the City
Council about dog parks at their May 4th meeting.
Your staff report’s direction list from the Council (fifth bullet) identifies ‘quick build’ items including dog parks. Quick
build fits well for dog parks. Requirements are minimal where at least ½ acre is available (one acre size is better):
footprint shape is not important, no grading needed as long as there are no areas of standing water, all-weather ground
cover (which may already exist, such as grass), and a water source (which already exists in City parks). On the technical
side, is the installation of the fence and gates, water lines, signage and waste disposal features. That’s all that is needed
to get a basic dog park up and running. While there are a number of other features that should be included, they are not
essential and can be added later. At least 10 of the City’s existing parks have at least ½ acre of land that could be
converted to enclosed dog parks. Several are mentioned in the draft Plan. Dog parks are also on the recreational 'needs'
list to consider within each of the six subareas to make neighborhoods more walkable.
We hope your Commission supports this additional direction from the Council. We look forward to working with the City
in whatever way we can to expedite the installation of one or more enclosed dog parks as quickly as possible.
