Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear Mayor and City Council Members, This year, one of your advisory bodies, The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force, put forth recommendations to the council to “focus on systemic change across all city functions, departments, and policies to create a culture of representation, equity, and inclusivity.” Has the council considered these recommendations in regards to the proposed Mitchell Park pickleball courts? Pickleball courts will not promote diversity, equity or inclusion in this unique and meaningful public space. According to the USA pickleball association and their 2021 pickleball fact and media sheet, 62% of participants are men and 60% of Core players are 55 or older (core being defined as playing 8 or more times per year). The questions you should be asking yourself regarding any change to this unique public space: 1. 2. How 3. have SLO residents used this public space during the pandemic and in recent years? Use shows value. 4. 5. 6. How 7. can we ensure equal access and “proactive inclusion” at Mitchell park? 8. 9. 10. How 11. do we reach out and listen to our community about their open space needs and wants? 12. Thank you for your consideration, Amy Armstrong 1
