Dear San Luis Obispo City Council,
I understand that you will be considering the city budget for the next two years at your meeting on Tuesday,
and that the proposed budget includes an increase in police funding. I am writing to remind you that Students
for Quality Education (SQE) has called on you to take the following actions, and that the Executive Board of the
San Luis Obispo chapter of the California Faculty Association (CFA SLO, the labor union representing Cal Poly
faculty) has voted unanimously to endorse these actions:
*Reject any expansion of the San Luis Obispo city police budget or facilities,
*Reduce the San Luis Obispo city police budget and officer headcount by 33% for the next fiscal year, and
*Offer rent, mortgage, and utility relief to residents of the city, who are suffering economic hardship due to
the pandemic
Some Cal Poly students (and possibly some faculty) will be speaking against the proposed increase in police
funding during the public comment period at your meeting on Tuesday. I urge you to heed their
comments. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Lewis Call, Ph.D.
