MEMBER OF CITY COUNCIL
City of San Luis Obispo
JAN HOWELL MARX
Occupation: Dean/Professor/Lawyer
Experience and Qualifications: Facing this time of pandemic, economic downturn and
divisiveness, the City of San Luis Obispo needs to elect a Council Member who puts the health
safety, and welfare of residents first. Under my leadership --six years as Mayor and six years on
Council --we became recognized as an outstanding place to live, work and play. Obviously, we
cannot turn back the clock. Instead, we must seize this opportunity to create a thriving post
pandemic future for the City of San Luis Obispo, by working together toward the common good.
We need to elect a Council Member with: 1) the experience, knowledge and practical vision to
guide City policy wisely, respecting residents' values; 2) integrity, civility and the willingness to
listen to everyone, without playing favorites; 3) a track record of decisions based on prudent
budgeting, accountability, social equity, open space preservation and climate action; and 4)
dedication to increasing affordable housing, helping the needy and improving our quality of life.
am the only candidate who fits that description.
A longtime resident, married grandmother, Stanford and Santa Clara Law graduate, educator,
and businessperson, I support the Chamber, Rotary, NAACP, City Farm SLO and
environmental organizations.
