Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Ms. Scott, Since the Motel Inn project is set to be reviewed by the CHC next week, I thought I should resend a letter that I sent in 2015 when the last proposal for the property was reviewed. My letter is in regard to cultural resources that may still exist on the property that warrant, at least, a phase-one archaeological review. Thanks you for your consideration, Bob Vessely 1 August 31, 2015 Mr. Phil Dunsmore, Senior Planner Community Development Department City of San Luis Obispo 919 Palm Street San Luis Obispo, California 93401 RE: Motel Inn Mr. Dunsmore, Since discussions have begun regarding the redevelopment of the Motel Inn property on Monterey Street, I thought that it would be important to bring to your attention some cultural resources that may exist on the property. Attached is a composite map that consists of the City’s street map, a Google Earth aerial photograph and a portion of a plan titled “Map of the Water Supply of the San Luis Water Co.” dated 1879 (City file #5201 - G10H). Once they were scaled and oriented, the maps line up to show that there were three houses, a reservoir and a waterline in the area of the Motel Inn. The reservoir and one of the houses are across San Luis Creek from the property and another of the houses is on the Apple Farm property but one house and a “sheet iron pipe” appear to be on the Motel Inn property. There is no detail on this map that would indicate what kind of house this was or who it belonged to but Judge Walter Murray had a two-story adobe in the area (see the attached photo). Admittedly, the water pipe may not garner much public interest, but it is, nonetheless an important artifact of the development of San Luis Obispo after statehood. Since the redevelopment of the Motel Inn property will go through an initial assessment if not further study under CEQA, I expect that some level of archaeological evaluation of these features would be required. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Robert S. Vessely, PE Encl. CC. Ms. Jaime Hill, Chair of the Cultural Heritage Committee. .
