STUDY SESSION RE: DOWNTOWN SLO PARKLETS
Initially meant to be a temporary social distancing tool, the parklets in the City of San Luis Obispo have taken
on a whole new meaning and we (as owners of two parklets-Buffalo Pub & Grill and F.McLintocks.com Saloon)
couldn't be happier!
In our post -pandemic culture, widespread introduction of parklets is providing our community and visitors with
meaningful recreation space, filled with people eating, socializing, and enjoying themselves, which in my
opinion outweighs any concern of lost parking.
The introduction of parklets as a temporary social distancing tool has created the framework for these to take
on a more permanent design. Most parklets have a distinctive design that incorporates seating, greenery,
and/or bike racks, which promotes alternative means of transportation and settles thickly into the irony of
needing a parking spot in the first place! They accommodate the unmet demand for outdoor space on our
thriving neighborhood retail streets. Moreover, most of the parklets cost next to nothing to taxpayers, but
provide increased pedestrian activity, which stimulates both social and local economic benefits ... The more
people walking by, the more people might stop in and shop or eat!
We hope these beautiful additions, with design and natural elements sprinkled in, become popular, permanent
fixtures in our City, as they have transformed automobile -oriented spaces into more enjoyable "human" and
recreational space.
We trust the City Council of San Luis Obispo shares our sentiments and will approve the parklets' permanency!
Thank you all for your consideration.
