Subject: Support for Parklets, Parking fee Increases and Street Lighting
Dear Mayor Harmon and City Council,
We support the parklet program which has greatly expanded safe outdoor dining in SLO. Our concerns are the
following:
1. Ensure that neighboring businesses are not negatively impacted. Perhaps require support of an adjacent
business before approving expansion beyond the applicant's streetside footprint.
2. Music, outdoor speakers, announcements should not be audible beyond the business streetside property (for
example, we object to the loud music speakers at Finney's)
3. Set standards for outdoor installations so that they are attractive and neat.
We support staff's recommendations for parking fee increases
1. Parklets have reduced parking and parking revenue
2. The City needs to accumulate funding for new parking structures.
That said, we are in favor of continuing to provide the first hour free in our parking structures, even though this reduces
revenue. This is an incentive to park in the structures.
Street lighting:
The strings of lights in downtown have provided much cheer during the last difficult year. The lights seem to say,
"Welcome! We are open!" We hope the City will make the lighting permanent.
A big thank you for your efforts to keep SLO vibrant.
