Mayor and Council,
I wanted to share my support for maintaining parklets in downtown, and expanding Monterey street and the dog -leg
segment of Broad into pedestrian only/car-lite streets. This has been a great improvement.
I know there is a trade off on on -street parking to make this happen, but with the recent direction to build a fourth
parking structure downtown it's time to expand the reutilization of our on -street parking to better serve our community,
visitors, and businesses. Get people on foot, SLO them down, and they will patronize more businesses, spend more time
downtown, and want to come back sooner.
One way to think about the trade off of parking is to think about how ridiculous it would be to revert Monterey back to
what it used to be to gain parking. Could you imagine losing Mission Plaza for 20 parking spaces? As I am sure you are
aware, during the planning of Mission Plaza there was plenty of argument about the lost parking there and how it would
destroy businesses.
I do believe the restaurants are making a lot of money on the added space and they should be able to make up lost
parking revenues by paying rent. If they don't pay rent, that is an unfair business advantage.
Thanks for your consideration.
