Dear Mayor Harmon and City Council
I am grateful that the City Council is aggressively addressing Solid Waste in its City Plan Strategy in “lead
By Example” to reduce overall solid waste. Landscape waste and office‐based operation waste are big
issues, but both are considered “compostable” if they get out in the environment. Plastics and single‐
use foodware is not. I am pretty disappointed that nothing was included to address plastics and reduce
single‐use disposables in the City plan.
We are all aware that the IWMA may be dissolved of sooner than we think, and can’t depend on them
to take leadership. In fact, a phone call initiated from Deputy Director, Patti Toews on Monday 7/19,
indicated that they are still operating at the will of the current IWMA Board who are back‐peddling any
enforcement to any of the IWMA ordinances. Ms. Toews said that each city must take up its own lead
on what they want to happen.
Last week, at the Farmer’s Market was a show of non‐compliance of Green Waste by a restaurant –
close to Finney’s Restaurant on Monterey. Photos attached. Other Food Waste was in the Recycle Bin
for Cans and Bottles next to it. There was a bag of take‐ out full food at the base of this Green Waste
Bin, as it was full.
Please, let’s address overall Single‐Use Food Waste and compliance with our Garbage Hauler – San Luis
Obispo Garbage.
I’m also attaching the Regional Strategy to Solid Waste that was passed by the IWMA Board, March 18,
2018.
