Mayor Harmon and Council Members Christianson, Marx, Pease and Stewart:
I intended to attend last night's Council meeting to comment during the study session on Open SLO
Long-Term Strategies, but was delayed at home and ended up watching the meeting via video. Just a
quick follow-up to thank you for your support and commitment to parklets and the Monterey Street
dog-leg. You seized the opportunity to turn the negative effects of the pandemic on local businesses
into a pilot project to determine if the public would accept parklets and other strategies to provide
more space for people rather than motor vehicles. Congratulations on a successful pilot! I'm looking
forward to implementation of a vision that will make downtown SLO even more of a destination for
locals and visitors. I am especially fond of Monterey Street's new look between Morro and Chorro. It's
a delight to experience this people-friendly block that extends Mission Plaza.
I also want to express deep concern about the anti-vaxxer's comments during the public comment
period. As a vaccinated person, I attended the Planning Commission and Active Transportation
Committee meetings last week and felt comfortable without a mask. However, I am not comfortable
attending meetings with people who are openly hostile against Covid vaccinations and masks based
on misinformation. Is it possible to create a video featuring the county public health officer to counter
misinformation by anti-vaxxers at future meetings? Public health is at risk.
Thank you.
