Upon creation, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) Task Force authorized its chair and vice chair to
issue statements on matters within our scope on behalf of the entire Task Force. In my role as vice chair,
I want to acknowledge the impact of the recent charges related to the July 21st protest by the
independent authority of the District Attorney’s office of San Luis Obispo.
Amman Asfaw is the chair of the City's DE&I Task Force. Mr. Asfaw is the youngest member, sole
student, and was unanimously elected as chairperson. He is a graduate student in electrical engineering
and part-time lab instructor at Cal Poly; he will complete his master’s degree in June 2021. Mr. Asfaw is
the current president of the SLO chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers and the only student
columnist for the American Society for Engineering Education’s magazine, Prism. Mr. Asfaw embodies
his personal core values of respect, integrity, and commitment through servant leadership.
On behalf of the DE&I Task Force, I want to convey support for Mr. Asfaw’s continuance as both a
member and in the role as Chair. He is passionate and thoughtful in his service to the San Luis Obispo
community. We look forward to his ongoing contributions in the pursuit of diversity, equity, and
inclusion.
The specific charter of the Task Force includes collecting information and insight in order to advance
diversity, equity and inclusion in the city, recommend funding for community-based DE&I programs, and
provide recommendations on the development of a potential DE&I-focused Major City Goal and the
enhancement of the Human Relations Commission.
The Task Force’s efforts are embedded in cultivating a community rooted in the belief that there is no
greater characteristic of a true democracy than social justice, freedom, and equity.
