HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/21/2021 Item 8a, Brooks City Of San Luis Obispo Subject: City of San Luis Obispo, Community Workforce Agreement Dear Madam Mayor and Council members, My name is Jesse Brooks, I am a carpenter and member of local union 805. I would like to thank you for considering a vital Community Workforce Agreement for the City of San Luis Obispo. A CWA is the only process that can truly make a difference in the lives of local working men and women. It is through your insight and willingness to take a bold step our community may benefit from the first ever citywide workforce agreement. Implementation of a CWA on the WRRF project is proof of the success that can be achieved and has far exceeded the expectations of local hire. CWAs assure the following for hard working people: -Full family health plans -Skilled and trained workforce standards through certified apprenticeship -Paid sick leave, pension, and vacation/holiday pay Responsible bidder standards should be established to ensure high quality construction performance. Following are two important examples: -Construction contractors at every level shall comply with labor law and have no history of fraudulent or grossly negligent business practices. -General Contractors should be required to self-perform a minimum of 5% of all construction craft work for which they are responsible. We believe all City of San Luis Obispo residents deserve an innovative economic solution that puts them on the path to build better careers, increase access to family healthcare, and enrich the community at large. Thank you for seeing the need for a CWA and taking action to implement this important action. Sincerely, Jesse Brooks(805) 878-7917 Local Carpenters Union Member
