Honorable Chair Bate and Committee Members -
We are pleased that the applicant has modified his proposal to remove 26, instead
of 47, on-site trees. Hopefully the letter we sent the applicant on August 23, 2021
might have made a difference here.
We understand and approve the following reasons for tree removals. The following
trees are rated “poor preservation suitability”: 3, 34, 35, 36, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 78,
79, 80, 81, 82, 83, 84 and 85. All but two of these trees - 84 and 85 - are proposed
to be removed. Fifteen additional trees are rated “low vigor”: 2, 4, 5, 8, 9 , 12, 14,
17, 69, 22, 24, 28, 30, 32 and 33 and eight of these trees - 32, 33, 30, 22, 24, 28, 17
and 69 - are proposed to be removed. Though a little more effort could have been
expended to work the site plan around some of the California Pepper trees in order
to save them, we understand that these ten trees are proposed to be removed
primarily because they interfere with the present street layout. Finally, we are
especially pleased that the applicant chose to protect the following trees 5, 8 and 1,
because they are the tallest and are said by a KMA biologist to be raptor nesting
sites.
Thank you!
