Dear Parks & Recreation Commission,
I’m writing in response to the recent destruction of the dirt jumps at the Costco parking lot. I have enjoyed using the
jumps for many years and know as well as anyone the value they provided as a community resource. I am, however,
happy to see them gone. That’s because I recognize the problem they represented as an unauthorized, unmanaged site.
As a 29 year old professional I have no desire to feel like an outlaw while enjoying my lifelong hobby.
Clearly there is demand for bike park facilities, especially with all the new pandemic mountain bikers. I hope this fine city
will meet that demand with a deliberately planned and adequately resourced park. A park at Laguna Lake or Sinsheimer
would eliminate the unsafe bike ride, or more likely car ride, to Costco. A park with adequate beginner and advanced
features would serve all users, not just those doing the digging. And, if successful, this bike park would alleviate traffic
on other trails, providing benefit for all who enjoy the outdoors, not just mountain bikers.
I am optimistic that the Costco jumps will be replaced with something much better, and can’t wait to see what this city
delivers.
Sincerely,
Riley Kuhn
