Subject:Dirt Jumps & Pump Track in SLO City

Dear Parks & Rec Commissioners,
I'm writing to urge the commission to locate an appropriate area to build a pump track and dirt jump area. I am a SLO
City resident living in the Highland Dr / Ferrini Heights neighborhood.
The recent removal of the "Costco jumps" has been a significant loss for the local recreation community. Exercising on
bicycles is a great activity, especially for kids, and we want to be encouraging kids to get outside and get fit.
Two locations that have been brought up are Laguna Lake Park and along the Railroad Safety Trail near Sinsheimer.
These are both good candidates.
Near the sewage treatment plant is a much poorer option, primarily due to poor bike access (south Higuera is high
speed and dangerous for bicycles, especially children on bikes). Given the city's climate and transportation goals we
should build recreation facilities in areas that are easily accessible without a car.
Many fine towns, including South Lake Tahoe, Truckee, Boulder and Santa Cruz have built outstanding dirt jump and
pump track bicycle facilities that are a great asset to these respective communities. SLO should follow the example set
by the above-mentioned cities and work towards creating a legal area for kids to recreate on bikes in this manner.
Respectfully,
Connor Culhane
