Dear Parks & Rec Commission,
Bike parks add draw for tourism and if designed well are of substantial benefit to the community! They can
increase safety - providing kids & adults with safe places to practice their skills and utilize positive outdoor
recreation. Thinking through issues such as potential for transient vandalism and accountability are
imperative for the success of the park. Please spend time researching and evaluating other cities with
successful bike parks - there is no need to reinvent the wheel! The park in Boulder, CO called Valmont is a
great one to use as an example - especially since it's a similarly built city with successful growth. St. George,
Utah also has a successful park - the parks are different but have in common quality planning and strategy
which have increased the overall city desirability.
Placing the park in a location that will be visible and not draw negative and destructive crowds is key to the
success - SLO already has problems with areas being taken over by negative crowds - the SLO Skatepark,
while well built, was placed in an area that already had unhoused encampment so enables encampment which
means that when I take my kids early in the morning, there are often people sleeping in or around the park
and engaging in illegal activity - this drastically diminishes the desirability and ability of responsible citizens
to use the park. I implore you to think through and be proactive in your bike park location and strategy so that
it can be an asset to our community for years to come!
Sincerely,
Irish Turnage
