Hello PRC Commission Members!
My name is Adam Scott, a SLO local born and raised, and proud to still call myself a happy SLO citizen
????
When I’m not working full-time or spending time at home, I’m also the acting President of the SLO Throwers
Disc Golf Club; a local non-profit who is responsible for maintaining, developing, and managing events our
local disc golf courses. We’re dedicated to promoting the sport of disc golf and fostering a sense of community
for disc golfers in San Luis Obispo County. Since 2004, SLOThrowers has designed, funded, constructed and
maintained 4 disc golf courses in San Luis Obispo County: Sinsheimer Park (2004), Heilmann Park (2005),
Laguna Lake and Santa Margarita Lake KOA (2011). We have recently assisted in developing and providing
consultation to two other course located at Mountain Brook Church, and Diary Creek Golf Course. Amongst
many fundraisers, we have also recently began to hold events at Laguna Lake Municipal Golf Course in
coordination with the city and course staff.
Disc golf has been around for quite a while, but has boomed to become one of the most popular sports in over
40 countries. Covid restrictions fed the boom due to disc golf being one of the few sports played outdoors
where socially distancing was easily maintained. Local courses have seen the amount of players at each course
per day increase nearly threefold. During our most recent fundraising tournament, we had 75 players turn out
for a single round. Disc golf is as an environmentally friendly, family oriented, and socially beneficial sport that
helps enable lifelong fitness and can coexist amicably with other recreations in urban areas and parks. Disc
golfers are friendly, respectful, and encourage a positive and inclusive environment for people of all ages.
Active disc golf parks are a sight to see, and by playing them regularly, they’re kept beautiful and appealing to
all.
Earlier this year after an extensive grant was received, Helene Finger and Lea Brooks of the Friend of the Bob
Jones Trail (BJT) reached out to us about the possibility of developing a disc golf course near BJT. After a few
meetings with the Friends of the BJT, a club member and myself inspected a proposed site for a course to be
installed. This location, amongst others, would make for an incredible disc golf course in an area that is
somewhat lacking in any sort of large/open park space. From what I understand, a new disc golf course located
near the trail was suggested as part of public comment for the recreation plan. Our club as well as other local
clubs and players 100% support the development of this course, we as a community would be extremely
excited to see a course placed where it can easily be accessed by bike, and shared with those that may not be
located near another course.
I wish all of you well, and hope this could be a serious consideration moving forward.
Best,
1
