Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. To our city council members, as well as those who may have a stake in this decision: It’s come to my attention that discussion about funding a new police center is returning, and should it go forward - I am not currently informed enough to have an opinion on that - I would respectfully request consideration in naming it the Benedetti Public Safety Center. As someone close to the tragedy of May 10th, I can not adequately express my feelings on the matter, but I do have a story to tell that may help all sides appreciate this choice. When my five year-old children asked me about the blue ribbons downtown, I made a painful and necessary decision on my part to be transparent about why they were there. It fostered a discussion about someone they considered a friend needing help, our inability to support him, about people in harm’s way in reaction to his actions as a result of that, the weight of those in authority and power needing to work within systems in place, and the decisions they make costing others’ and their own lives. I hope my honesty with such young children will support them in the future as they grow up here and are confronted with life in all its challenges, because talking about it with them is gut wrenchingly difficult, as it is for me to write this. I feel that should you choose to name the Public Safety Center after Detective Luca Benedetti, these kinds of conversations will continue not only for those indelibly affected by it, but for those who were not - hopefully teasing out nuance and sensitivity with every opportunity, all while honoring someone we all can agree deserves it. Whether people believe in #defundthepolice or #backtheblue or something in between or neither - honoring Detective Benedetti in this way will ensure conversation is something that can help improve the policing, policies, and honor those involved in the tragedy long into the future.
