Re: Ordinance 1517, San Luis Obispo Tourism Business Improvement District
Dear Council Members:
As we have done in prior years, we would like to challenge the continuance of the SLO TBID
assessment. Upon its creation, the TBID assessment was intended to benefit all properties
equally. We regret that this is still not occurring.
The marketing of San Luis Obispo is concentrated on upper and upper-mid level hospitality
properties as opposed to economy level, of which our property and many others is a part. The
economy segment in the hotel industry is very sensitive to room rate fluctuations. A variance of
even a couple of dollars impacts the customers decision of which hotel to stay with or whether to
come to San Luis Obispo.
Our property can more effectively market itself using the funds raised by the TBID tax as
opposed to having the TBID manage the marketing. Our property generates enough TBID funds
each year to pay a part-time marketing employee which would also increase employment. We
would benefit more from doing our own marketing, including social media, which we don't have
funds for at this time.
We regret that the original intent and standards of the TBID assessment have not occurred and do
not approve of any continued assessment.
Sincerely,
Robert F. Mueller
