To: SLO City Council: From: Thomas Shumard of San Luis Obispo Re: Support of winter access of Cerro San Luis Date: 11/09/21 San Luis Obispo City Council Members As a resident of San Luis Obispo County for 42 years and the city of San Luis Obispo for 20 years, I have always considered it a blessing to have such a wonderful trail easily accessible for both physical and mental fitness. I fully support the program for hiking after sunset until 8:30 PM during the winter months at the Cerro San Luis trailhead. I've hiked and trained on this trail for over 40 years, often during the evening hours in winter. I've never seen any negative impact to wildlife or habitat attributable to trail use in the evening after sunset. We live in busy times. Often, a few hours in the early evening is the only time available after a long day at work. For many I believe it's a chance to leave their keyboards and monitors behind to get back to nature and a healthy lifestyle. I strongly encourage you to allow the continued use of this wonderful trail for a few hours after sunset in the evenings. Thank you for your time, Thomas Shumard San Luis Obispo 1
