Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear Council Members, I’m writing to request a positive vote on the agenda item, " Proposed Changes to Title 6.c. (Animals)” accepting the staff recommendation: Due to interest expressed by the City Council during the meeting of July 20, 2021, concerning available areas for limited bee keeping activities, and due to the importance of honey bees for pollination in domestic agriculture, Section 6.28.070 entitled “Bees Prohibited” is proposed to be amended to allow for bee keeping for agricultural purposes within a Conservation/Open Space or Agricultural zoning district, along with the existing allowance for the purpose of study and observation in a hive or box within a school building. Since this item seems to apply only to the City’s Calle Agricultural Reserve, which includes City Farm SLO, as Executive Director I want to point out that this modification will increase our ability to promote pollination on the many crops raised by our subtenants and students in our educational programs. It will also contribute to efforts to support our threatened bee populations. In addition it will provide an opportunity for local beekeepers to keep hives and produce honey and for our local beekeepers alliance (http://www.centralcoastbeekeepers.net/) to mount educational programs for our students and for interested community members. We have been assured that in case of any problems with keeping bees at the farm, experts in this organization will assist us in solving them. Thank you for considering this request. Sincerely, Kayla Kayla Rutland Executive Director, City Farm SLO kayla@cityfarmslo.org // (860) 949 0366 www.cityfarmslo.org Facebook/Instagram: @cityfarmslo 1 2
